Glass bells & rain

Crystal bells in E Lydian, struck by rain against a window, over a soft wash of white noise. Each bell is two slightly mistuned tones, so it shimmers as it rings away.

What you will hear

Glass bells & rain, note by note

A struck glass bowl rings with overtones that are not simple multiples of its note, and two near-identical tones beating against each other give it its shimmer. Both are built into this bell.

The rain sits behind the glass: muffled outside, with sharp little taps where drops hit the window.

How it works

Why it never loops

A composer in your browser picks each note as a drop falls, from the key and chord of that moment. The instrument is synthesised live, so there is no recording to repeat. Every visit starts a new piece; a shared link replays one from the start.

Questions

Good to know

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no subscription and nothing to install. Press play and the rain starts.

Can I have just rain, or just noise?

Yes. Rain, music and noise each have their own fader. Set any of them to zero and the others keep playing on their own.

Does the music loop?

No. A small composer in your browser chooses each note as it plays, from a seed that is new every time you open a piece. The only way to hear the same piece twice is to open its shared link.

Will it keep playing when my phone screen turns off?

It is built to: on iPhone and iPad the sound is sent through a standard audio player so it can continue with the screen locked, and play and pause appear on the lock screen on most phones. Keep the tab open, and leave the volume low before you sleep.

Does it work offline?

After the first visit the site is stored by your browser, so it can open and play without a connection.

What happens with the sleep timer?

Over 30, 60 or 90 minutes the music gradually slows, plays fewer notes and grows darker in tone. In the last part of that time it fades to silence and stops.
