Three layers
Rain, music and noise, each on its own fader
Sleep Rain Music layers three sounds and lets you set each one. The music is ethereal and slow, and the rain plays it: every drop that lands on a thread of light becomes a note. Rain comes in nine kinds, from a light drizzle to a thunderstorm, a tent or a forest. Noise sits underneath as a steady bed in white, pink or brown. Turn any layer to zero to leave just the others.
- Rain. Nine kinds, from a drizzle or rain far away to a thunderstorm, rain on a window, a tin roof, a tent or a forest, with thunder you can switch off.
- Ethereal music. Piano, wordless choir, glass bells, harp, strings or celesta, composed while you listen, with a shimmer above every note.
- Noise. White, pink or brown, mixed under the rain rather than on top of it.
Noise colours
What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
They differ in how their energy is spread across pitch. White noise has equal power at every frequency, so it sounds bright and hissing. Pink noise loses about 3 decibels with each octave up, which sounds softer and more even. Brown noise loses about 6 decibels per octave, leaving a deep rumble.
| Noise | How its energy is spread | What it sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| White | Equal power at every frequency | Bright and hissing, like a detuned radio |
| Pink | Power falls by about 3 dB per octave | Softer and more even, like steady rain |
| Brown | Power falls by about 6 dB per octave | Deep and rumbling, like a distant waterfall |
The music
How does the rain play music?
A small composer runs in your browser. On every beat it decides whether a drop falls and which note it carries, chosen from the key and chord of that moment. You see a drop of light fall, land on its thread and bloom into an orb at the instant you hear it. Heavier rain plays more notes. Thunder changes the chord.
- Generated, not recorded. Every sound, rain and noise included, is synthesised as it plays. There are no audio files.
- Never the same twice. Each piece grows from its own seed, so it does not repeat unless you share it.
- Light that lingers. Each note stays as a glowing orb after it sounds, then floats slowly upward and fades.
Mixes
Eight mixes to fall asleep to
Each one is a starting point: a kind of rain, a noise colour and a piece of music. Once it is playing, every layer is yours to change, including the instrument.
Ethereal piano & rain
Floating piano, a shimmer above every note.
Choir in the rain
Wordless voices, swelling and fading.
Glass bells & rain
Crystal bells, rain on glass, a soft hiss.
Aurora strings & storm
Slow strings in a storm. Thunder turns the chord.
Harp & starlight
Plucked harp, a drizzle, a shimmer.
Celestial lullaby
Celesta in lullaby time. No thunder.
Brown noise & rain
A downpour on a deep rumble, with soft strings.
White noise & rain
Rain on glass, a soft hiss, quiet bells.
For the last hour of the day
It winds down with you
Set the sleep timer to 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Over that time the music slows and plays fewer notes, the whole mix grows darker in tone, and at the end rain, music and noise fade to silence together.
- Dim screen. One tap turns the picture down to a low, warm glow for a dark bedroom.
- Phones. Built to keep playing with the screen locked, with play and pause on the lock screen.
- Your mix, remembered. Your levels are kept in your browser for next time.
The station
One piece, played for everyone at once
The station plays the same music for every listener at the same moment. Open it on two devices and the same drop lands on both at once. A new piece begins on the hour, with a different instrument each time. Your rain and noise stay your own.
It needs no server: the hour itself is the seed, so every browser composes the same music independently and arrives at the same note.

Share it, or save it
Every mix has its own link, carrying the piece, the rain style and the noise colour. Send it to someone and theirs begins the same way yours did. You can also save five minutes of any mix as a WAV audio file, rendered on your own device.
Questions
Good to know
Is it free?
Yes. There is no account, no subscription and nothing to install. Press play and the rain starts.
Can I have just rain, or just noise?
Yes. Rain, music and noise each have their own fader. Set any of them to zero and the others keep playing on their own.
Does the music loop?
No. A small composer in your browser chooses each note as it plays, from a seed that is new every time you open a piece. The only way to hear the same piece twice is to open its shared link.
Will it keep playing when my phone screen turns off?
It is built to: on iPhone and iPad the sound is sent through a standard audio player so it can continue with the screen locked, and play and pause appear on the lock screen on most phones. Keep the tab open, and leave the volume low before you sleep.
Does it work offline?
After the first visit the site is stored by your browser, so it can open and play without a connection.
What happens with the sleep timer?
Over 30, 60 or 90 minutes the music gradually slows, plays fewer notes and grows darker in tone. In the last part of that time it fades to silence and stops.
